Ashly: Megan's response.

IN the novel that I am reading, True Notebooks, The character Jimmy is struggling with the concept or idea of God. He writes about it on page 82. he writes " the question of whether there really is a God out there has been bugging me the past couple of months. I used to be a firm believer of the Almighty, and nowadays I ask myself, "Are you out there."...."I think he has struggled with the idea of there being a higher power because he is in such a negative place and he knows things really are not going to get much better from this point on. I think he feels like he is alone, and to him if there really was a God, he would be helping him out. With his brother's condition, he knows he will die. Jimmy knows many people pray for him, but it is inevitable that he will die at a young age. Jimmy just blocks God out and doesn't really want much to do with him because he doesn't think any thing will change. He sees no point of praying daily, he knows that there is no hard evidence that there really is a God and I think it bothers him. He knows that most people rely on God in hard times like the ones he is faced with and yet he has turned away from him. I think he is surrounded by so much negativity in his life that he doesn't want to pray to God, and for something else to go wrong and him to be completely let down again. He knows that others around him still believe but he just can't anymore.

A time when religion and society has affected my life, was a time that affected everyone in America. It was September 11th, 2001. I was in the forth grade. I remember being in math and all of the sudden my classmates kept being called out of class. I didn't know why. My teacher left the room for a long time. I was told soon after that I had to go into another room. I got to watch Oliver and Company so I was excited. By the end of the day it has me and three other classmates left in the room. I remember my Mom picking me up from school, she was sad. I told her everyone left. She told me something bad happen. She said that two planes had hit the Twin Towers in New York City. The weird thing about it was earlier that day when i was watching Oliver and Company the opening scene was the Twin Towers. It was ironic. I remember not fully grasping what had happened until I was at home. The news was on. I saw the replays of what had happened in the morning. I saw the second plane hit, i saw the smoke, the people running, even people jumping out of windows. It seemed like a terrible scene out of a movie. I was in shock. I remember thinking about how many people were in the building, how many lost their lives. I began to cry. This day had a terrible effect on me. Most kids my age I don't think really realized. It hit a soft spot for me. Mainly because of the brave fire fighters and police officers that ran into that building as everyone was running out. They ran into collapsing sky scrappers to save people. The risked their own lives to save others. That was what impacted me the most. There was people in a time like that, that were brave enough to risk everything they have, they were brave enough to go into that building knowing that they could never see their families again, they knew there was a strong possibility of never being able to go home and see their children, to watch them grow up and yet so many just ran into that building risking their own lives for others. It just really impacted my life and every American.

I think society has had many positive impacts on people. I think It sets standards for how people should act and treat others, which is good. I think it keeps everything in line. I do think our society has some genitive aspects as well. I think in the culture we live in today, our elders are not seen as much. Most cultures see them as wise people who can help lead the young. In our culture we just put our elders in retirement homes and set them aside. I think they are a very valuable part to our society, and shouldn't be set aside. I also think our society could help out those less fortunate in third world countries instead of fighting two wars.
