Marjane is very religious at the beginning of the novel. She believes she is the last prophet but as she gets older she starts to realize many people do not look at religion as a tool for doing positive things but a tool to separate and convict people that think differently. So my character is extremely influence by religion. It is practically part of her society people just have different ways of interpreting it. The fundamentalist who are also the government want a more strict traditional lifestyle to the religion and if you do not live like that, you do not believe in the Islamic religion and are breaking the laws that were highly influenced by the Islamic religion. Many would say that the laws were made for the good of the people. Marjane's family on the other hand who do not follow traditional Islam see it more of a threat because the government is executing people who still believe in Islam but in a more modern lifestyle, wearing suits and colorful dresses.
How has religion impact my life? I honestly can say it has not influence my life a lot. I am a non-practice catholic, i believe in the catholic faith but do not go to church or pray. So no, i have not let religion change my life. Society has taught me that no matter what there is always gonna be some group out there that is not going to like how you think and why you think, especially religion. I had a sociology class in high school and one of our assignments was to pick a religion and report on it, i had Scientology. We all know the creation story for Christians, God made the earth, plants, animals, and humans in seven days. Scientology believes that a 75 trillion years ago galactic overlord named Xenu wanted to depopulate his galaxy so he sent his people to earth and put them all in a volcano and blew them up with a hydrogen bomb, and now part of their souls are a part of us the only way to get rid of these souls were to go to sessions called auditing. Now i am not here to talk about Scientology but from the sound of their creation story, most of us probably think their crazy. Now look at the Christian creation story, earth and everything on it was made in seven days, and two people Adam and Eve populated the human race, and Jesus was born from a virgin. To many of us this probably sounds normal and you have nothing wrong with it while non-Christians think we're crazy and do not know what we're talking about. So what im trying to say is religion should be used as a something that helps explain the world to you in a way you can accept.
