Day 7: Chris

Megan Response:

The protagonist in "The Complete Persepolis" Marjane I would say society affected her views on religion. In the beginning of the book we see Marjane relationship with God rivals that of her parents but as society quickly starts to change and people in Marjane's family begin getting killed off her faith seems to diminish and God is no longer there. Now with the religion in the book the change is sort of like a 50/50 situation, because some people are against it and some are for it. However, the way the people go around demonstrating how they feel about it differ and that's where the conflict comes into play. Instead of society trying to meet a compromise about this they choose violence and use the join us or die method like that of the crusaders. The society in Persepolis do think the exact same way of the crusaders once you think about it seeing as people opposing the new rules and systems in place either end up dead or face cruel treatment. I can't relate to any of this at all in my life seeing as I do believe in God but I tend worship him in my own way. At the same time however I do see people taking religion to the extreme from time to time to the point that some of them just end up being complete liars. I think that's why I never bought into religion, because some of it is just a bit too much for me. I don't like being judged or judging other people so why do people in certain religions feel they have the right to? Just doesn't sit well with me. Same with society I don't keep up with what's going on most of the time so I think I dodge getting affected by it most of the time. Sure I hear about the big time news and it makes me wonder how can people do such horrible things but I don't look at society as a whole as the bad guy.

  1. I can definitely relate to what u said about not buying into the whole religion thing, i use to think who ever wasn't Catholic was not to be trusted, but after listening to the late George Carlin about religion, he opened my eyes and made me realize that most of religion is bullshit a quote from George Carlin that really opened my eyes
"I want you to know, when it comes to believing in god- I really tried. I really really tried. I tried to believe that there is a god who created each one of us in his own image and likeness, loves us very much and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize...something is FUCKED-UP. Something is WRONG here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is NOT good work. If this is the best god can do, I am NOT impressed. Results like these do not belong on the resume of a supreme being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would have been out on his all-powerful-ass a long time ago."
Now if you think it like that, he is right and religion is and will always be a man made idea but as humans looking for explanation for everything we have to except it and not judge how people get explanations for things they don't understand.
